What Healthier Glades Is
Healthier Glades launched in 2017 as one of Palm Health Foundation's Healthier Together initiatives. The premise of Healthier Together is that the people who live in a place should decide its health priorities, and the foundation's job is to fund and support what residents choose. In the Glades, residents chose behavioral health — with the stated goal that people here thrive physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Its best-known piece is the Mini Grant Program. Rather than one large award to one large organization, Healthier Glades makes small grants to residents and grassroots groups with a workable idea: a walking group, a support circle, a chair yoga class. Since 2019 it has awarded more than $140,000 across 52 residents and organizations, and it runs workshops to help first-time applicants write their own proposals.
It also convenes. Let's Move 365, with Digital Vibez and other local partners, exists so that opportunities to be active are available all year rather than in bursts around a campaign.
Why it matters to us
- Free and low-cost movement in the Glades often exists because a mini grant paid for it — that includes classes our members attend.
- Referrals run both directions: they point residents toward activity, and we point residents toward behavioral health support we are not qualified to give.
- If you have an idea for a wellness program on your own street, the mini grant is a real route, and we will happily help you think it through.
